Attention Collectors! This is the very first year of this body style!
The fact that this car is not only a convertible, but also a factory air conditioned car, makes it pretty cool! The current owner purchased it about 20 years ago, and has put about 13,000 miles on it since he has owned it (It had 90,000 actual miles when he bought it). He is also including a 1968 Corvette assembly manual and another shop manual in the sale.
DETAILS OF CAR:
[ Paint ] According to the owner, the car has been repainted twice. The entire car was repainted about 10 years ago, and the front was painted again 3 years ago.
The car has a nice shiny repaint. It may not be the highest quality (and black is not the most forgiving color), but it shows well overall. Upon close inspection, you can see some light sanding marks between the right rear tail light and the vent in the back (by the gas cap). They are hard to see. There is some chipping by the left door handle where the body panels meet, and a few other spots on the left front fender. There is a slight amount of orange peel, and it is just a nice, shiny driver car. (Paint code 972 indicates that the car was originally "Polar White".)
[ Body ] The hood and headlight fits look nice overall. They look correct and match up well. The same is true of the top cover, except that the hinge (on the right rear edge) might need an adjustment. The doors seem to fit well, although the drivers door hinge seems a little worn. It looks like it is causing it to drop down a little at the top edge (by the door handle), and to hit/chip other panel.
The corners of the front fenders have slight cracking in the body. There are a couple of 6-8" cracks extending out from the corners and across the fenders. There are also 2 more 2-3" cracks developing between the headlights.
[ Chassis ] The car has never been out in the rain for the last 20 years, except for maybe getting caught in a light sprinkle. The chassis looks like it was always kept dry, even prior to the current owner. The owner and I believe it has a good solid chassis, without rust-through perforation. (see underneath chassis photos below)
[ Chrome ] The front bumper and the chrome around the grill are in very nice condition and shows very little wear. The rear bumpers show nicely and the chrome looks great; but up close you can see a little bit of wear starting to show (it is pretty insignificant). The stainless around the windshield looks nice, with just a few lights dents on the left side. The door handle chrome has just a little wear.
[ Top ] The top seems to work well, and is in good condition. It does not look old or dried out, and looks flexible. The stitching is in good shape, but the rear window is cloudy and scratched from normal use. The top mechanism is painted black and is in nice condition.
There is a slit on the left side of the bottom edge (with a tiny cut further up). There is also a double slit on the right side. Both places have been patched from the inside. This solution seems to work ok, but you can see it. There is also a spot on the right side window edge, where the glass hits a little bit (see photos). Overall, the top looks good, and has quite a few years left.
[ Interior ] The interior appears to be original. The leather trim seats look good. The door trims are starting to curl, but look fairly decent (although screws were used to hold them down). The drivers seat stitching is coming loose at the front, and the beading is torn in a few spots. The seatbelts appear to be in order.
The top dash panel is in nice condition, as are the gauges. There are some holes on the right side of the console from mounting screws used some time ago (see additional photos below). The steering wheel is in nice condition, with no apparent cracks. The sun visors are in fairly nice condition, although the right side seems more solid than the left. The shifter and air/ heat controls look original, but the cassette stereo is only about 5-6 years old. The carpet is older and has quite a bit of fading along the edges. Please note: this is an air conditioned car even though the compressor is not currently installed (the owner does not have the compressor).
[ Glass ] The windshield is free of bulls-eyes or cracks. The top left corner has some light scratches/wiper wear (it is just a small amount in the darker, shaded area). The side windows are in very nice condition and do not have grind marks (which sometimes happens when cars are sanded down and repainted). The passenger window does have chip missing out of the glass in the top corner.
[ Tires and Wheels ] The tires are Comp, V rated, Goodrich tires, 60 series. The front tires have about 7/32 tread, the rears have about 6/32.
The paint and trim rings are in great shape without any noticeable curb damage or wear showing. Extremely nice!
[ Engine Compartment ] We have pictures of the numbers on the deck (click more photos below). One set looks like it says "MEN". Then there is a second set that looks like 185416899 on the left side (which are the last digits of the serial number) and VO4I5HO on the right, in larger numbers.
Under the hood, it looks like other than a few modifications, nothing was altered to the point of not being able to bring it back to original if you chose to. The chrome alternator, brake, master cylinder cover, headers and pulleys, air cleaner, and chrome style fan all add a little touch. This is an air conditioned car, but it looks like the hoses to the compressor were cut at one time. The rest of the plumbing looks pretty much as it should.
According to our research, the engine code numbers indicate it is a 327 (300 HP) with a hydromatic transmission. It seems to have the correct drive train.
[ Mechanical ] Chad tested the following items, and they were working at the time of the listing:
Both power windows
Tachometer
Speedometer
Gauges fuel, water temperature, oil pressure, and battery charge seem to register
Clock works intermittently
Wipers (high and low) - Vacuum operated door open and closes
Headlights doors open and close fine
Heater (all fan speeds)
Radio (AM/FM is fine; owner also stated last time he used cassette it worked ok)
Top mechanism up and down
Front turn signals
Front headlights (high beam is out on far left)
Tail lights (however, owner states back up lights do not work)
Brake lights
Rear turn signals (left side may have grounding problem)
The lock does not work on the drivers side.
Upon driving the car, Chad and the owner noted that the car stops nice and straight upon braking (does not pull left or right, or pulsate). It appears to accelerate and run fine.
When warmed up, it runs around 160 - 180 degrees. When running around 2500 3000 RPMS, the oil pressure is close to 70 lbs. It looks like it stays around 50-55 consistently, and the amp gauge shows a slight charge.
The owner stated that the oil was changed once or twice a year. Between oil changes, he does not notice the oil level going down (or needing to add oil). The engine was rebuilt right before he bought it but the owner does not have any information on it. However, it is fair to say it seems like a good, tight, solid engine.
Equipment:
Power steering
Power brakes
Air Conditioning (missing compressor and miscellaneous parts)
AM/FM cassette radio
Telescope steering wheel (not working)
Wood style steering wheel
Additional notes from the owner:
When Chad interviewed the owner, he stated that the car was partially restored, but did not have a "frame off" restoration. Some of the newer items include:
Rear spring last year
Front end parts replaced as needed (last few years)
New carb (Quadrajet) in 2006
New front calipers in 2006
New water pump in 2007
Some of the other recent replacements or repairs are power steering box and lines, alternator, fan motor, seals replaced, etc.
